What is Tinnitus
Tinnitus (tin-it-us or ti-night-us) is the check engine light for your ear-brain connection. It is how your brain tells you it’s having an issue and is most commonly caused by damage to your hearing and auditory system; including the nerve which transfers sound from your ear to your brain.
Being a false perception of sounds like ringing in the ears, whooshing, or buzzing when no external noise exists, tinnitus acts as the brain’s compensation for damaged auditory nerves connecting the ear to the brain.
Many experience it as an early sign of hearing system breakdown, even with normal results in standard hearing tests (250Hz to 8kHz) which measures your performance to hear consonants and vowels. One thing people have been missing is that it is possible to have “normal” hearing on a standard hearing test with an auditory ear-to-brain nerve that is up to 50% damaged, and this can only be found out by testing your extended high frequencies.
If not treated, tinnitus may get worse, as your brain continues to maladapt from the deprivation of auditory stimulation. Watch this 11-minute symposium to learn more about your tinnitus.
Why Do I Have Tinnitus
The primary cause for tinnitus is not known, but it frequently happens with sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL). Other ear issues might also be a factor.
Tinnitus commonly results from damage to the hearing and auditory system, including nerves transferring sound from ear to brain. Causes include aging, noise exposure, toxic medications like chemotherapy, viruses, and other factors.
Tinnitus is a precursor of what’s to come due to the damaged nerve, and early treatment is a crucial part of slowing down the symptoms of tinnitus that will worsen over time.

How to Fix Tinnitus
You may have been told that there is no “cure” for tinnitus. However, like cancer, heart disease, and diabetes, tinnitus can be treated with a wealth of well-documented research.
Direct treatment stimulates the damaged auditory nerve with customized sound prescriptions, starting at 80% intensity and adjusting over 30-45 days to reduce symptoms. As the nerves continually retrain and reactivate with sufficient auditory input, tinnitus fades.
Our approach to treating tinnitus is logical:
If you activate or re-stimulate the damaged nerves that connect your ear to your brain, the brain’s instinctive sound replacement activity will decrease, and your tinnitus will reduce and, often even, disappear.
Toronto Hearing Services will treat your tinnitus by re-activating nerves, and managing it by masking the sound to ultimately eliminate the perception of tinnitus. Ongoing fine-tuning targets frequencies for long-term relief and sustained benefits.

Not always—early nerve stimulation treatment can reduce or eliminate it, unlike masking which only covers up the problem by trading one sound for another.
What causes ringing in ears?
Hearing loss is a primary factor, which could be damage to ear-to-brain nerves from aging, noise, or medicines.
Does hearing loss cause tinnitus?
Yes, often a precursor even if hearing tests are normal.
Can tinnitus be cured in Toronto?
Yes, with specialized auditory treatment that provides proper and sufficient auditory stimulation.
How to stop tinnitus fast?
Consult us for custom sound therapy and treat hearing loss; avoid unproven maskers.
